Essential opening phrases

すみません。
Sumimasen.
Excuse me. / Sorry.
Example: すみません、駅はどこですか。
Sumimasen, eki wa doko desu ka.
When to use it: Before almost any question to a stranger.
ありがとうございます。
Arigatou gozaimasu.
Thank you very much.
Example: ありがとうございます。

When to use it: After directions, help, service, or kindness.
おねがいします。
Onegai shimasu.
Please.
Example: メニューをお願いします。
Menyuu o onegai shimasu.

Direction and location phrases

〜はどこですか。
~ wa doko desu ka.
Where is ~ ?
Example: トイレはどこですか。
Toire wa doko desu ka.
When to use it: For stations, exits, hotels, restrooms, and places.
えきはどこですか。
Eki wa doko desu ka.
Where is the station?
Example: 駅はどこですか。

Buying and ordering phrases

これをください。
Kore o kudasai.
This one, please.
Example: これをください。

When to use it: When pointing at food, drinks, tickets, or store items.
おみずをください。

Water, please.
Example: お水をください。

One important truth about travel phrases

Good travel Japanese is not about showing off. It is about lowering friction. One calm, correct phrase can do more than ten random words. Use these cards as living tools, not as decoration.
